Dunnottar Castle, known in Scottish Gaelic as Dun Fhoithear meaning "fort on the shelving slope," stands as a medieval fortress in ruins perched on a rocky headland along Scotland's north-east coast, approximately 1.9 miles south of Stonehaven. While the surviving structures primarily date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, it is believed that the site was fortified during the Early Middle Ages. Due to its strategic location and formidable position, Dunnottar Castle has played a significant role in Scotland's history, particularly during the Jacobite risings of the 18th century. Notably, it gained fame as the secret hiding place of the Honours of Scotland, the Scottish crown jewels, from Oliver Cromwell's invading army in the 17th century. Previously owned by the Keiths since the 14th century and serving as the residence of the Earl Marischal, Dunnottar's prominence waned when the last Earl lost his titles due to his involvement in the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. However, the castle underwent restoration in the 20th century and is now accessible to the public.

Spanning an area of 3.5 acres, the castle ruins sprawl amidst steep cliffs that plummet 160 feet to the North Sea below. A narrow land strip connects the headland to the mainland, leading to the gatehouse through a steep path. Within the castle precinct, visitors can explore various structures, including the 14th-century tower house and the 16th-century palace. Dunnottar Castle holds the status of a scheduled monument, with twelve buildings on the site listed as historic structures.
